Did you know that the pineapple is a symbol of hospitality?
During the period of world exploration, sailors and explorers would bring home exotic treasures from faraway lands. The pineapple, with its unusual skin and delicate nature making transportation difficult, became a highly prized commodity. As sailors returned home they would place on their fences pineapples to invite neighbors and friends into the home to try exotic dishes and hear wild tales. During the Colonial period, the pineapple became a symbol of hospitality through the creation of metal door knockers and elaborate table centerpieces. Guests were symbolically welcomed and lavished with a warm welcome.
